Paul Hamilton's Airport Operations and Communications course is designed for you to feel confident and comfortable at Non-Towered and Towered Airports.

The course is based on two fundamental "best practices" to minimize risk of midair collisions and provide common courtesy for all pilots:

  • Part 1 - Pattern Operations:
    • Adjust speed and pattern size to account for different speed/category aircraft.
    • How to enter the pattern for different scenarios
  • Part 2 - Use proper clear and concise communications techniques with efficient:
    • Who you are talking to.
    • Who/what you are.
    • Where you are.
    • Your Intentions.

Research on airport procedures and collision avoidance is mainly at towered airports. This is an effort to implement best practices at non towered airports to minimize midair collisions discussing common problems and offering practical solutions.

The "See and Avoid", "Visual Scanning" and "Lighting systems" is used as the basis of safety in the pattern. This document provides an ADDITIONAL TOOL for non towered airports for safer traffic communications and pattern procedures to avoid midair collisions while providing common courtesy for all pilots. Using the techniques This course will provide a safer operating environment, common courtesy for pilots and you will be more respected In your environment with professional communications.

Additionally, this course provides the basics for operations in Class C airport operations where the tower provides separation but you must utilize the proper communication techniques while under Air Traffic Control.
